JOB DESCRIPTION 

Waterline Resources Inc. is a medium-sized groundwater resources and environmental consulting firm based in Calgary, Alberta, with satellite offices in Edmonton and Nanaimo, BC. Waterline has a growing Information Services team that provides support through business workflow automation, data management services and mapping and visualization products to the hydrogeologists on staff and to our clients.

The Waterline Information Services team maintains a proprietary, custom-built geospatial web application for groundwater and environmental information, driven by a PostgreSQL database.  This central application also serves several administrative and business intelligence tools. Our goal is to continue iteratively adapting and expanding our applications to meet evolving internal and external client needs.

We are looking for an Intermediate Web/GIS Developer to bridge the gap between our software development team and our GIS analysts and to contribute to the design and implementation of innovative web-based hydrogeology and environmental solutions. The successful candidate must be self-motivated as the learning curve is steep and the consulting business pace is rapid.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 3 to 7 years of experience in GIS software/web development on collaborative, iterative projects.

• Self-driven and eager to always improve.

• Experience with relational database architecture (PostgreSQL preferred).

• Demonstrated experience with spatial data processing (QGIS, GDAL, PostGIS).

• Open-source interactive mapping libraries (Leaflet, Mapnik, GeoServer, OpenLayers).

• Geospatial service and consumption (GeoJSON, WFS, WMS, REST).

• Experience with scientific, statistical, and/or geospatial domains.

• Proven experience in Python, JavaScript, and SQL.

• Knowledge of web framework architecture like MVC (Django preferred).

• Experience with source control systems and collaborative programming (e.g. git).

• Declarative front-end experience (e.g. RiotJS, React).

• ORM experience is an asset (e.g. Peewee).

• Automated report creation in Word, Excel and PDF formats.

• DevOps experience is an asset (AWS, Linux servers).

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Back-end development of internal and client-facing applications (Django, some NodeJS).

• Front-end development and design (JavaScript, RiotJS).

• Scripting and application development for custom solutions related to our business workflow.

• Relational database design and management.

This is a full-time position that would ideally be filled in person from our Calgary office. Alternative work arrangements (e.g., partial work-from-home) will be considered for the right candidate once relationships and performance have been established.
