JOB DESCRIPTION
Waterline is seeking a highly motivated junior to intermediate hydrogeologist to join our Water Resources division in British Columbia. This is a unique opportunity to work with a team of over 85 hydrogeologists and environmental scientists and engineers on groundwater resource projects across Western Canada, the United States, and South America. This position can be based out of Waterline’s Nanaimo office, or from a remote office anywhere in BC, depending on the candidate’s seniority. Currently we have staff working from home offices in Victoria, Courtenay, Kamloops, Valemount, and Smithers. Preference will be given currently residing in Alberta or BC.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must have a university degree in hydrogeology or a relevant geoscience/engineering discipline, with a keen interest in continuing to advance their technical skills working alongside Waterline’s team of senior hydrogeologists and environmental scientists and engineers. Candidates with the following specific qualifications should apply:
Graduate or undergraduate degree in hydrogeology, geology, geological engineering, engineering geology, environmental engineering or related discipline.
2-8+ years of relevant consulting and/or industry experience in physical hydrogeology;
Excellent communicator, both verbally and written, and experience working in a team environment (fluent Spanish is an asset).
Strong work ethic with well developed organizational and time management skills.
Working knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation related to groundwater resources and mining including the BC Mines Act, Environmental Management Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Water Sustainability Act, and related code and policies.
Experience with geological modelling (e.g., Leapfrog), groundwater flow modeling (e.g., MODFLOW, FEFLOW) and/or water balance/water quality modelling (e.g., GoldSim).
Experience in managing field staff, project deliverables and client expectations.
Ability to maintain effective clients’ relationships and develop new ones.
Experience with drilling techniques, installation of monitoring and production wells, and soil and groundwater sampling procedures.
Experience using water level meters, data loggers, EC meters, electronic submersible pumps, etc. to gather hydrogeological and environmental data.
Experience designing and performing slug tests, packer tests, and aquifer pumping tests.
Candidates must be comfortable working in field settings, including remote locations and Canadian winter weather.
Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada with no restrictions.
Preference will be given to candidates with professional accreditation in Alberta, British Columbia or Saskatchewan.
JOB DUTIES
Provide technical input on a broad range of technical services, including water supply exploration and development, drilling investigations, groundwater well installations, seepage pathway assessments, dewatering assessments, baseline characterizations and environmental impact assessments.
Develop conceptual hydrogeological models and integrate these models with other science and engineering disciplines to guide decision making on critical projects.
Complete hydrogeological investigations of local and regional scale groundwater/surface water systems for environmental assessments during project development, operations, remediation, and reclamation/closure.
Prepare technical reports and presentations for clients and public stakeholders.
Perform business development activities such as writing proposals, generating work plans, and most importantly, building and maintaining effective relationships with Waterline’s existing clients.
