  • Waterline Featured for Regional District of Nanaimo Work in EGBC Magazine "Innovation"

Waterline Resources was recently featured in the Engineers and Geoscientists BC publication "Innovation" for our work with the Regional District of Nanaimo on their innovative drinking water and watershed protection program. "The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) spans an area over 2,000 square kilometers on the east coast of Vancouver Island from Deep Bay in the north to Yellow Point in the south. The watersheds in the region are defined by short distances from mountain top to sea, with active forestry in the upper watersheds, productive agricultural lands in the middel watersheds, and growing urban and rural communities in the lower watersheds. The land base is marked by some larger rivers and many smaller fish-bearing creeks. Drinking water for the region's communities comes from a number of complex groundwater sources and a few surface water sources. Like other locations in the province, the region is experiencing change: population growth as more residents are attracted to the area; climate change that manifests as longer, drier summers and more frequent short-term duration intense rainstorms; and an evolving regulatory landscape that opens up possibilities for local water management. What sets RDN apart is that in the face of unknowns and changes that can affect water resources, they are at the helm, actively steering to a sustainable, well-informed future. Their long-term innovative regional program to protect water resources recognizes watersheds as the best management unit and enables collaborative initiatives including community participation in water monitoring and water conservation." • New Alberta SAGD Regulations for Groundwater

On June 1, 2018, the Alberta Government released a directive entitled the Assessment of Thermally-Mobilized Constituents in Groundwater for Thermal In Situ Operations, such as arsenic. The Directive was developed to identify and address potential adverse impacts to groundwater, and nearby receptors, as may be related to in-situ thermal operations (e.g., SAGD). The Directive requires site-specific baseline groundwater monitoring and characterization in aquifers near applicable well pads. Future monitoring is also required at down-gradient locations. Specific time-frames to initiate and complete ongoing groundwater monitoring and reporting are also specified. For existing (approved) projects, a Groundwater Monitoring Thermal Report must be submitted to the Director by March 31, 2020. New project applicants must factor the requirements of the Directive into their project application information. Please contact Waterline if you have any questions regarding how to ensure compliance with the Directive for your new or existing In Situ project. • Sampling Day with Queen Elizabeth High School

Waterline was excited to be part of the team that designed, organized, and volunteered at Queen Elizabeth High School to enhance their environmental education program for grade 9 students. The program used the Canada Creosote site in Calgary as a way to engage students and included a field trip where students got to collect water samples from the Bow River with "real scientists", as well as a laboratory component at the school. Thank you to all of our collaborators (North Shore Environmental for volunteering their time to help with sampling, AGAT for donating their time to analyze samples, the University of Calgary, the Galileo Educational Network, and Queen Elizabeth High school)! • A Busy Month for Waterline Presentations

Jamie Wills, President of Waterline, and Michelle Taylor, Associate Engineer at Waterline have had a busy month presenting our technical expertise to a wide audience. Jamie Wills presented Past and Future Hydrogeology Applications in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin for the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, as well as a follow-up presentation to earth science graduate students and faculty at the University of Calgary. These presentations focused on the fundamental importance of hydrogeology and water resources to all sectors of the Alberta economy. It also highlighted the evolving role that government, academia, industry and consulting must play to ensure that Alberta’s water resources are sustainably managed for current and future generations. Michelle Taylor is presenting this afternoon at Exova Tech Talks about the importance of water supply maintenance. Waterline has tested 1000s of water supplies and has assisted with maintaining 100s of water supplies since the company’s inception in 2000. During these decades of experience, Waterline has often encountered industrial and domestic users of potable and non-potable water supplies that are not maintained, leaving themselves and their visitors at risk. Individual domestic water users can easily manage their water supplies using publicly available information, such as the Alberta Government “Water Wells That Last” guidance, but managing water supply risk for hundreds of industry water supplies can be a daunting task. A case study will be reviewed that outlines a data-driven compliance and maintenance program that Waterline has developed to assist Waterline’s client with maintaining 100s of water supplies. #watersustainability #waterwellmaintenance #shockchlorination #waterwellsthatlast #hydrogeology

  • The BC Groundwater Licencing Application Fee Waiver Period Has Been Extended Once Again!

On December 15, 2017, The BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change extended the existing use groundwater licence application fee waiver period from December 31, 2017 to March 1, 2019. If groundwater users submit their applications before March 1, 2019, their application fee will be waived. The application fee can range from $250 to $10,000 depending on the quantity and purpose of using water every year. Although the deadline has been extended to 2019, the government is encouraging groundwater users to submit their licence applications early, so their groundwater use is known and protected. Learn more about the fee waiver extension at: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2017ENV0018-000546 For more information on the BC Water Sustainability Act and Waterline's groundwater licencing services, please contact Steph Righi, Waterline Resources Inc.’s Water Sustainability Coordinator at 1-844-585-0802 Ext. 112. #bcwatersustainabilityact #watersustainabilityregulation #watersustainabilityact #groundwaterlicensing
